Being an American is about more than just enjoying the freedoms opportunities that this country offers. It’s about appreciating the struggles and achievements that have shaped this nation and recognizing the responsibilities that come with being a citizen of this great country. It’s about striving to live up to the ideals of liberty and justice for all and working to ensure that the United States continues to serve as a beacon of hope and liberty for the world.
This quote from President Ronald Regan was true then and is even more important, today:
“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same.”
As proud Americans, we have a number of important responsibilities. Each person doing their part helps ensure the United States will prosper and continue as the example of democracy to the world.
- Civic Participation: Participating in the democratic process is a fundamental responsibility. This includes voting, staying informed about current issues and engaging in peaceful discourse. When called upon, serving on a jury is a civic duty. It ensures that the legal system functions fairly and that individuals receive a fair trial.
- Respect for Law: Respecting and obeying federal, state and local laws is incumbent upon us all. Supporting our police is crucial for maintaining order and ensuring justice.
- Community Service: Contributing to our community, whether through volunteering or other forms of service helps improve the lives of our fellow citizens.
- Environmental Stewardship: Protecting our environment is not just a global responsibility but a national one, as well. As Americans, we must care for our nation’s natural resources and promote sustainability.
- Education: Pursuing education enables us to contribute more effectively to our society and economy. It’s our responsibility to seek knowledge, in a financially responsible manner and promote educational opportunities for all. Parents should participate in the PTA, attend school board meetings and have input into student curriculums and governance.
- Paying Taxes: Paying income and other taxes on time is crucial for funding government services and infrastructure. Taxes support everything from public schools to national defense.
- Supporting and Defending the Constitution: Citizens are expected to support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States. This includes understanding the principles and values enshrined in the Constitution and advocating for their preservation.
By fulfilling these responsibilities, American citizens help ensure the nation remains free, just and true to its founding principles.
